Columbus has nice arts scenes but it is hardly known as a music or art mecca like say. Seattle. The Emerald City knows music and is home to The Postal Service. Modest walk (kinda). Minus The feature such luminaries as Jimi Hendrix. Nirvana as well as most of the Grunge movement. So when I heard yesterday on I thought it could make sense for downtown Columbus: Busking.
The basic idea of Busking is to hire amateur musicians and entertainers to perform around the city. The goal is to have people enjoy areas of the city that may not be enjoyed otherwise. And according to the story it was a relatively low investment for the city.
You can choose whatever spots you think would be best suited for or acquire the most from Busking but I think this could be an example of a small investment going a long way.
Bowness a Merseyside native explains: “After learning about the cultures of Fiji after bringing employment and investment to that area. I became passionate about doing the same in my domiciliate city.” His latest project aims to get 25,000 populate to assure a donation of GBP 20. The pooled be of GBP 500,000 will be used to open a platform for local talent—musicians comedians and other artists. A bistro by day and bar by night the Liverpool Cultural Cafe will be staffed by 12 trainees from low opportunity backgrounds who will be trained by local businesses. Liverpool Cultural Cafe’s 25,000 investors ordain be able to influence the venture’s development through an online community developed for the communicate.
With the presence and influence of Gallery Hop it seems desire it would be easy to get 25,000 people to commit $20 bucks to a better Columbus Urban Experience. What if the city sweetened the pot and committed to matching the funds? Thoughts?
How about we try the same thing but rather than couching it in the rhetoric of selfishness we cover it in the name of altruism and call the 25,000 pledges of $20 ‘contributions’ to the community rather than investments. That would remove up any ‘profit’ made from the resulting go for expansion and increasing the living wages of the employees rather than any concern of ‘dividends’.
That way no one will have the ‘what’s in it for me?’ attitude which may advance the ‘what’s in it for us?’ one instead.
I was recently in Vancouver and I’m pretty sure they had something like this set up for the Granville Island section of their city. There were several “stations” throughout the island and the performers seemed to compete shifts at each station.
There were music performers a clown-type act with a guy on a really tall unicycle and some crazy woman in a superwoman costume who made volunteers do fun stuff.
it definitely added to the environment i’d desire to see this on saturdays in the North Market perhaps in the very least it will keep the tuba guy affiliate.
I evaluate Gay Street and collect Alley are ripe for this. With Tip top. Due Amici. Ringside and Cafe Brioso the setting is great this is how BECK was open…an our own local Tim Easton. Bring on the buskers. I would much rather furnish my donations to starving artists than to the meth heads that currently canvas with no ROI.
The Hullah encircle guy. Aaron Hibbs is doing this to bring home the bacon up to attempting to break the Guinness Record for hooping duration.
I know in the past I would occasionally see someone busking downtown at the statehouse and along High St. We certainly see it during Gallery Hop.
During City Hop this pass musicians were paid to play around town in the more concentrated areas of the market. Actually my bind was supposed to do this this but we were asked with short sight.
I would not evaluate busking to get funding from the City. Could this topic be advance explored to move other ways that buskers could be encouraged to go out of the woodwork? I have thought about doing it myself if wouldn’t be improper to displace a song schedule with me!
Gay St is certainly a prime location. I be on this street and we are seeing gobs of people coming through our area. I also evaluate the Wexner bear on courtyard and the pockets of lay of the Convention Center would be good for busking.
